HR consumerization refers to creating a social, mobile, and consumer-style experience for employees. MIT research has found that the expectation of social and collaborative tools in the workplace are no longer just a millennial request. The objective of HR consumerization is to create One employer brand which provides a seamless experience for current employees, potential employees, and consumers.

 

EM: For those unfamiliar with the concept, what does “the consumerization of HR mean”?


Kelvin Lovely: The “consumerization of HR” is a rather broad topic but, at its core, its bringing what the employee or associate is used to experiencing in their non-work life and bringing that into the workplace. Its providing an experience that replicates what they’re used to in the marketplace when they use Uber, Amazon or a United App. Any type of App or experience they have a with a vendor or retailer. For example, now, I go to Amazon to do most of my shopping instead of going to 15 different websites to get everything I need. It’s all in one place and it’s accessible to me any where, anytime. So taking that kind of experience and translating it into the employee work experience is what HR consumerization is really all about.

 

EM: How does the “consumerization of HR” apply to HR shared services?Why is it relevant and what sort of unique opportunities and challenges does this trend present to our audience?
