The HR Metrics & Analytics Summit surveyed 250+ global HR leaders and anonymous employees to create a well-rounded understanding of the current state of workforce analytics, data privacy and how organizations
apply employee records and data to HR activities. Employers are increasingly gathering data on employees – from workplace behavior to social media use and other personal information—to produce insights that benefit the business. This raises a significant question. Is your employer watching your every move? The findings in this report explore corporate use of employee data, metrics, and analytics, and employee perceptions of workplace privacy and protection in 2018.

The survey found that 80% (Chart 1) of organizations are using employee records and data to measure employee performance. A fair number of organizations are also using employee records and data to measure retention and reduce turnover, boost engagement and improve recruitment. Interestingly, less than 40% (Chart 1) of organizations are making use of employee data to enhance company culture. When HR leaders were asked how they are analyzing data, 27% (Chart 2) use data reactively -- typically via ad hoc reporting -- to inform critical workforce decisions.

Twenty-five percent (Chart 2) indicated that they use data proactively - typically via operational reporting. Only a small proportion of HR leaders are currently using analytics proactively and 14% (Chart 2) are rarely using data to inform workforce decisions. While a handful of (mostly large) trailblazing companies are successfully using analytics, relatively few are using analytics well. As a must-have capability in today’s business climate, organizations must work to improve how they analyze their data.
