Design Principal IBM

Joni Saylor directs IBM’s Design Thinking practice, with a mission to inspire adoption of human-centered innovation approaches across IBM’s teams and clients. She previously led IBM’s Design bootcamp for early career professionals, an interdisciplinary corporate education program that has prepared nearly 1000 recent graduates to join IBM's product and service teams. Saylor has held senior positions in design research and industrial design and previously taught the InnovationSpace studio at Arizona State University. 

Joni is a Master Inventor, recognized as a leader in creating and disclosing intellectual property. She regularly speaks with design and business audiences on design education and transformation. Her work has been recognized by IDEA, industrie Forum, HOW, and Core77.

9:00 AM SITE TOUR A: Design Thinking Innovation Lab Tour at IBM Studios Austin + IBM Watson

In a world where learning, training and development needs are getting more personalized, design thinking allows for a human-centered approach to problem solving that allows organizations to be more innovative and creative. Instructional designers and learning development specialists need to be able to fully understand this theory when designing training.

IBM’s Austin Campus serves as the nucleus for a plethora of operations including leading locations for both IBM Studios and IBM Watson. You may wonder how design and AI are related, and what their interplay could possibly mean for the learning and development. The interaction between the two are actually critical, particularly as it relates to applying human-centered, ethical approaches to AI technology leveraged in learning and development.

In this double header, immerse yourself in both IBM Studios Austin and IBM Watson’s Austin presence. Learn about IBM’s custom Design Thinking methodology and their iterative “Loop” model while simultaneously experiencing some of the latest and greatest IBM Watson technologies for learning and development.
