Main Conference Day 1 11/28/2018

Workshop A

8:30 am - 10:30 am WORKSHOP A: Preparing for the Next Recession: What L&D Needs to Start Doing Now To Avoid Outsized Reductions
Dave Vance - Executive Director, Center for Talent Reporting
In July 2019 the U.S. will break the record for the longest economic expansion in
its history by recording 120 months (10 years) of continuous growth since the great
recession of 2008-2009 ended. While the timing and severity of the next recession
cannot be accurately predicted, it would be safe to assume that we are due for the
next one within a couple of years. We also know that L&D budgets and staffing are
usually impacted severely by a recession, far more than other departments.
Join Dave Vance to explore what you can start doing now to prepare for the coming
recession. Hopefully, we have two years before it hits so there is time to put your
department in the best possible position to weather the recession.
The following topics will be covered:
• The planning scenario for the coming recession
• The importance of strategic relationships and positioning
• The type of reporting and analytics that will mitigate the reduction
• How to convert fixed expenses to variable expenses
• The benefits and disadvantages of different cost recovery strategies in a recession
• The role of governing boards, transparency and credibility

Executive Director
Center for Talent Reporting

Workshop B

8:30 am - 10:30 am WORKSHOP B: Design Thinking to Jumpstart your Learning Experience Design [LXD]
Angel Green - Head of Talent Development, Veeva Systems Inc.
In today’s demanding workplace, many instructional designers find themselves
paying more attention to theory, documentation, and content curation than the
actual product they are designing. For organizations interested in shifting away from
delivery of instructional content to developing a true learner experience, the tools,
techniques and philosophies of Design Thinking can be an excellent resource for
training professionals.
In this session, you will learn about the power of design thinking, human-centered
design and the creative process - walking you through methods you can use to tap
into your (and your project team’s) creative power.
Participants will learn to:
• Recognize why design is often overlooked in the instructional design process
• Refocus design on the learner and the behavior change desire instead of the
• Utilize methods to encourage the creative thought process within project teams
• Uncover a holistic five step process, from ideation through testing to help create a
learner-centered instructional product

1:20 pm - 1:25 pm CLN OPENING REMARKS

1:35 pm - 2:15 pm KEYNOTE SESSION TITLE: Back to Human: How Great Leaders Create Connection in the Age of Isolation

Dan Schawbel - Partner and Research Director at Future Workplace; New York Times bestselling author, Future Workplace
Technology has impacted our workplaces in ways that weren’t possible a decade ago. We feel “highly connected.” But are we, really? Instead of strong bonds, we have weak
ties. Instead of productive meetings, we have distractions. Despite the illusion of 24/7 connection, in reality, most workers feel isolated from their colleagues, leaders and
organization. What they crave most—and what research increasingly shows to be the hallmark of the highest-performing workplace cultures—is a sense of authentic connection
with others. They want to get Back to Human. Dan Schawbel shows you how—while still optimizing all the benefits of technology. Drawing from his much-anticipated new
book, Back to Human, Dan Schawbel has created a culture-transforming experience for leaders and managers that extends far beyond the typical keynote, to include scientific
assessments and a follow-up webinar. Schawbel has conducted over three-dozen research studies, surveying over 86,000 people in twenty countries and individuals from
companies such as Google, HBO, Starbucks, Facebook, General Mills, GE and Nike. What he has learned will forever change how you look at the importance of workplace
connectivity and getting Back to Human.
• Why the highest performing and healthiest teams are the ones that are the most connected.
• How technology can negatively impact work relationships—and how to radically improve them.
• How to recognize and support employees who feel isolated from the team.
• How team connectivity impacts business outcomes and can increase loyalty and organizational commitment—and ways to encourage it.
